Artists to Watch: Janelle Monae

I ran across this video of Janelle Monae’s first single “Tightrope” feat Big Boi from her upcoming album The ArchAndriod. I love this chick! She reminds me of a female version of Andre 3000. I first heard of Ms. Monae a few years ago, and i’m really amped about what she’s bringing! Check out her new video.

Story behind “Tightrope”

excerpt taken from ArtistDirect.com

“Tightrope” deals with balance. Early on in my career, and even now, it’s a daily struggle to stay balanced and not get too high or too low. It was something that I hadn’t really heard in a song. If I was telling somebody how to make it through life, I would definitely tell them that balance is important. You can’t get too high on praises and you can’t get too low on any one situation. I wanted that song to be an empowerment song. I wanted people to find their inner confidence and to feel more self-empowered in understanding that they have to stay more balanced in life…

Are you a Driver or a Passenger? Left is Right…Marinate

It seems like a lot of artists have lost their uniqueness. Like they are afraid to be themselves. NOBODY IS LIIKE YOU! I ran into a rapper and he was telling me he needed a producer, I was like ok cool. Judging from his track jacket and kicks, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and told him to spit something. I heard him out (Never invest until you can investigate). He had flow to him, but one thing was lacking…He reminded me of everybody else! His content was cool, but nothing stood out to me so I gave him this analogy:

“Every car has a driver and a passenger. One is on the left, and the other on the right. The Driver has the steering wheel, so wherever the driver goes, the passenger goes. If the driver makes a u-turn, the passenger u-turns. It may sound weird, but sometimes its right to be left.” He looked at me kinda funny…so I continued. “If you think about any successful artist, they never did what seemed right, they always seemed to go left. Think about Outkast. When they came out, everything was either East or West Coast, there was no respect for Southern music. The South was only known for booty music, but Outkast went left. They took control of their car and refused to be someone else’s passenger. Its not wrong to be a passenger, but you limit yourself to someone else’s results. Be unlimited. Be original. So are you a Driver or a Passenger?” Still taking it in, he took a minute, looked at me and told me, “that was probably the realest thing I’ve heard…how old are you again?” I just laughed…

The problem is, folks are scared to drive. They’d rather go from passenger to passenger, instead of passenger to driver. Sometimes you gotta drive on unpaved roads…
